Email me when someone replies to this comment. OhEssex Oct 14 Years ago, when overnight Parallels changed their policy from two allowable computers per user to only one, I got forced into buying another license that day so I could use it at my work location.

I was livid, and swore I’d never give that company another cent. They could have grandfathered in existing users, but they didn’t. A well deserved pox on that miserable company.

Derekcurrie Aug 26 What Is This Thing? Beats me why! It’s a day DEMO only. Best virtual machine software for mac out there. I’d rather poke a hot stick in my eye than have to install this software again. One frustration after another – not all of them are Parallels fault, but it all adds up to one hot mess of pain.

Minor annoyance: even though you buy the boxed package, that’s all you get is a box. You still have download the software – which I hate. No backup disk, and I have to use my metered, slow internet access. Once installed, it immediately starts downloading a trial version of Windows 10 from Microsoft.

This assumes that your sole purpose for installing the software is to run Windows Maybe it’s not. I cancelled the download and then nothing seemed to work right after that so I reinstalled Parallels. I was even worried it screwed up my Mac because it wouldn’t restart and left some weird pixels on the screen until I forced it to do a hard power cycle.

I then figured out how to get to the menu that gives you the option to download trial version 5GB! That last option sounded great! Very cool! It doesn’t work. At all. After I installed the transfer tool on both computers, they would not connect.

Both are on the same network, but all I ever got was messages about verification errors, check your internet browser worked fine , and some note about making sure certain IP ports were open yeah, like the typical user knows how to do that.

I tried the option to connect directly to the other computers via its IP address. Guess what? Didn’t work. So, I decided to try the option to use an external storage device to transfer.

It’s almost midnight and that will be another hour waiting for it to create the disk. Chances that it will work? Not holding my breath. Will update review tomorrow after a sleepless night of cursing Parallels.. Of course, now it’s warning me that my Microsoft validation will probably fail once I install it under Parallels.

Do I have any clue where my license key that came with the computer is? Of course not. All these hours of pain will probably be for nothing. Both worked well, so I have little doubt that this version will work well too – if you can actually get it set up. The reason I don’t even want this software is that not until it arrived did I found out that it is a 1 year license only!

Had I purchased this, it would have immediately gone back, but Amazon gave me a copy that I have to pay income taxes on to evaluate.

I really wish I hadn’t accepted it because now I’m committed to keep trying to install the nasty thing. I just hope that when I finally trash it, it doesn’t leave my Mac OS in a bad state. I can just imagine the directors at Parallels sitting around the conference room table saying “hey, there’s not really a whole lot more we can do with this product, so how can we stick our fat hands in the customers’ pockets to keep getting more money? I know, let’s make them re-purchase the product every year whether they want an update or not!

Listen, Parallels, there’s only two reasons anyone would buy your product – either they just want the convenience of running two systems on one computer, or, like me and many others, we use Windows software so infrequently, that we can’t justify having a whole other computer for it. I’m NOT going to pay you every year for the ability to run a Windows app every couple of months. There is no value in that.

I might as well just go buy a cheap Windows machine that comes with a perpetual OS license since by the time I paid your stupid subscription fees for a couple of years, I could have just bought a whole dedicated Windows machine! So, based on my initial install experience and the idiotic subscription model, I cannot recommend this product. Unless VMWare Fusion has also switched to this abhorrent model doesn’t appear so , I would have to suggest you go there instead.

It never gave me any problems and didn’t pick my pocket every 12 months. You guess it. Utter failure. I know what it means, but have no idea how to make their tool configure it that way. So, still at square 1. I give up. I hate you, Parallels. I hope you go bankrupt.

Let me start with the bad, because this is why I knocked 2 stars off the rating. Parallels switched to a subscription only license — they no longer offer lifetime licenses that you once got by purchasing a box. Paralleles is charging the same price with nothing extra added. But unless you read the fine print, you will not realize this is only a one year subscription. I find this borderline scam behavior, this is barely mentioned anywhere and is stated on the packaging in just one small location on the bottom left corner of the box.

Now with that said, Parallels is still a great way to run Windows apps on your Mac almost as if they were running natively. Bootcamp is free, but it makes you reboot into a separate Windows installation. You can also convert an existing Bootcamp install into one that will work with this, letting you use you Bootcamp partition in whichever way suits you best. The Parallels software would get 5 stars. But their deceptive marketing deserves a lower score. Either stop the subscription or make it obvious this is only for one year.

Any Windows program can be run on your Mac, accessing files from the Mac file system. This Version 14 seems much faster than Version 13 was running Windows 10 with High Sierra – and presumably with Mavericks upgrading soon now that I have this. As an aside, I also use QuickBooks for Mac for some companies that don’t need the features of QuickBooks Windows and highly recommend the Mac version if it works with your company. With every recent version, Parallels has promised increased performance and frankly I’ve never noticed it.

But, with the move from 13 to 14, both QuickBooks and Quicken launch and perform noticeably faster, which is great to see. It is priced the same as what used to be a permanent license!

Perhaps new users will not notice or mind this. But, old users like me will be very surprised, as the product title on Amazon does not say ‘Subscription’ – it looks just like the old versions. You have to see the small print on the lower left of the box front – and read it at the bottom of the feature list. When you activate the product, you’ll be notified that it is a subscription with an expiration date in one year.

This is highly deceptive, and I’m really angry with the company for doing this. But, I’m only taking off one star as I highly recommend the product itself. The description bullets indicate that this is a One-Year subscription. Key-card with digital download link.
