The content effectively moves inside the region, which remains stationary. Slipping a region is possible only when the source content exceeds the length of the region by the amount you slip or greater. You can also rotate regions. Similar to slipping, rotating moves the region content left or right by the nudge value, but with the difference that content that extends past the region border on one side reappears on the other side, as though the region were a loop.

When an audio region is rotated, it is converted to a one-track folder indicated by a folder icon in the upper-left corner of the region containing two regions. If it is rotated multiple times, the number of regions in the one-track folder stays the same, but the junction point between the two regions moves through the folder, reflecting the extent of the cumulative rotation.

You can unpack the one-track folder, or unpack and merge it to a single region, by clicking the folder icon and choosing corresponding commands from the menu that appears. You can use slip and rotate to move the content of audio or MIDI regions. You simply can’t have two different overlapped regions playing at the same time on the same audio track object. Which is a good thing, IMO!

I use this feature all the time when I’ve got stacked solo takes and I’m doing quick edits to find out how the chunks are working together.

One thing that I used to do when recording multiple inputs simultaneously was to pack them in a folder after each recording pass and then mute the folder before running the next pass.

This was in Logic 6 I think. Later in Logic 7, I would have problems with some tracks not recording anything after making and muting the first folder. Never worked that out, I think it’s an L7 bug. I’m hoping I’ll be able to return to that workflow in L8. Don’t know if they’ve fixed it but if so, this routine might be applicable to your OP. The benefit here is that you don’t need to make a bunch of duplicate tracks, just pack each take into a folder and your tracks are empty and waiting to go.

Later, when editing there are ways to edit from both inside and outside the folders but that’s another topic! My original question was meant to be about how to create duplicate multiple tracks with a different audio object, though I probably wasn’t too clear.

Out of interest how does everybody work if for instance you have a guitarist recording on to 5 tracks who wants to double track his part or try another along side it? It sounds like what you are trying to do is create new tracks with duplicate settings for multiple tracks and I don’t believe there is an easier way to do it than what you talked about in your first post. I have run into this often. Usually when a producer or someone put in charge wants to do something like In protools you just select the all tracks at once and hit duplicate.

In Logic, as far as I know, the only way is to do it one track at a time, and you have to name each new track, assign a color to each track otional and select each track then arm the record button or group the tracks. Even making new tracks with duplicate settings of a single existing track requires that you type in a new name for each.

Thanks Mark, the new naming thing would be handy, i end up with lots of tracks called things like guit57stratverseLeft2b and that’s when I’m trying to keep things clear, there just isn’t time to write all that stuff. To paste the copies as regions, click the As Copies radio button.

Cut a region in half When you cut a region in half, the region is cut at its center and the right half is discarded, leaving only the left half. Double a region When you double a region, its length is doubled and the contents are repeated in the right half. Change the length of a region, cell, or event You can change the length of a region, cell, or event by an exact amount. The Length Factor pop-up menu includes a variety of set values, ranging from 0.

Another way to audition the differences between Track Alternatives is to use the Pre-Listen Alternative button. The Pre-Listen button is the one that looks like a power button. To the left of that is the Activate Alternative button which you can use to promote that Track Alternative to the top level. Another thing to note about Track Alternatives is that when you show the inactive lanes you can use all your regular mouse editing tools like the Marquee and Scissors tools to split and copy regions and then use the Pointer tool to move regions between lanes to create different arrangement ideas.

When working on a larger project the thought of experimenting with different arrangement ideas across many tracks can often be intimidating. Screen 2: You can try out different arrangement ideas by creating whole arrangement scenes using Track Alternatives. In the mixer, assign all your tracks to a Group and then open the Group Settings pop-up and tick Track Alternatives. Load up an existing song that you are working on and open the Channel Mixer.

Select all of your tracks and assign them to Group 1. Within the pop-up dialogue, drop down the Settings section at the bottom by hitting the disclosure triangle. Here, set the options so that only the Track Alternatives option is ticked see Screen 2. Once again, go to the Track menu and choose Show Track Alternatives.

Because all of the tracks are grouped, Logic creates a copy of the playlist on each track, effectively copying the entire arrangement, and assigns this to Track Alternative B.
