Verified Purchase. Amazing – a book from Microsoft that is written for the non-techie, easy to follow and use. If you have project design experience and need to use this as a tool in your project management, highly recommended. Just start at the beginning and follow it through. Takes time, but MS Project is not intuitive in a lot of places, and there are sequential steps in the text presentation that make life a whole lot easier.
Makes MSP usable from the start, and you go only as far as you need to go. The more complex is added as you go along, so you can get up and running and familiarized, stop anywhere along the path. Side tabs make resource searching simpler once you have a little background in how the book is arranged.
Good guide through the learning journey, excellent long term reference for MSP Standard. Did not use with Pro. I got a new job where I was doing admin work for a PM and I had never used the software before.
I blew through it in about 16 hours 2 days and haven’t looked back since. After I was done, I was showing all the PM’s how to effectively use Project including some tips that they never knew.
It’s a lot easier than trying to fake your way through Project. I just want to note that I would not consider this as a reference. If you just want to learn a couple tips and tricks in Project, this book may not be for you. This book is for the person coming into Project fresh and who needs a crash course. There are plenty of YouTube videos that will teach you neat tricks in less time if you are already familiar with how to use Project. Indeed, this book really brings the essential elements of the various features of MS-Project, which are important for day to day and for certification.
It is true that I used another book Microsoft Project Standard and Professional Portuguese Edition [Kindle Edition], but he functioned as a review and a great review! This second book is in Portuguese language, I just said this to you because if you do not want to get any kind of training – like me – it is better to try two books on the same subject, in this case, Ms-Project. Best Wishes. I have this book and two others “Microsoft Project The Missing Manual” and “Microsoft Project Inside Out” but to learn the software this is undoubtedly the best one.
This book presents the theory very well explained and than, immediately presents an exercise where we can use what we have just learned. The other two are “too much” theory and in the end are boring and unproductive. In a nutshell, using this book it is possible to learn the software naturally because it is really a step by step book with a real project to be developed. I think the two others are more dedicated for people that has a very good knowledge about MS Project and needs some material to make consults.
The title of the book suggests that the authors start out with “Step 1” and then help the readers work their way through the book, building on the material each step of the way. This is NOT the case. The authors instead created separate practice files for each chapter. It may be because going through an entire project, one step at a time, would result in a book twice as thick.
However, it would have been a lot more helpful if that were the case. The major drawback of having a separate file for each chapter is that it leaves learning gaps.
In Chapter 3, for example, we set up resources. Purpose : The MSP calendar defines high level scheduling rules for tasks, meaning that you can define that Monday to Friday are working days and Saturday and Sunday are non-working days.
MSP will take care of these directives while scheduling tasks. A MSP calendar can be used to specify working days and time, non-working days and time, and general holidays. You can start by using one of the above base calendars for your project schedule. In this tip I have talked only about Project Calendar. You should only tinker with the other types when you become more comfortable with MSP. Purpose : You have to plan before you start using a planning tool.
A planning tool like MSP can help you in your planning, but it cannot replace you. You have to supply the information list of tasks , so that the tool can do scheduling calculations for you. You should start by creating a detailed list of project tasks that you need to schedule. Otherwise, you will miss things that will cause troubles later.
It is difficult to insert a new task in the middle of a running project because it can disturb the whole schedule. If you do not know all the tasks at the beginning of a project, then you should list higher level tasks and decompose them later. See also the following tip. Purpose : Dates are automatically calculated by MSP if the task relationships are properly defined. You should not even think about the dates, duration estimates, or any other task attributes before creating a list of tasks.
You should first create the overall structure of project tasks and relationships among them before thinking about durations and dates. Purpose : A WBS divides and sub-divides a project into more manageable components. It reduces the risk and increases the predictability.
This goes along with the tip above. While creating the list, decompose the higher-level tasks into sub-tasks. Purpose : Only you, as a project manager, can define the working relationship between tasks. MSP will automatically calculate the task dates after you have properly defined the relationships.
After creating a WBS and defining lowest level tasks, you should define network dependencies and relationships between tasks. As you define the relationships, the dates of successor activities will be automatically calculated. You can refer to my other article on defining actual dates to understand the importance of these relationships. Purpose : Some tasks have client or environment-imposed date constrains.
You should identify these date constraints and insert them in MSP, so that it can take care of date calculations. You may want to have control over tasks dates for some of the tasks. You can manually schedule these tasks and make them independent of any other tasks.
MSP puts a constraint on manually scheduled tasks as soon as you associate a date with them. You must make a note of these tasks and their constraints, as MSP will not change them automatically. Purpose : Summary tasks are automatically calculated by MSP. The calculations might not happen correctly if there are predecessor s in the summary tasks.
The dates and duration of a summary task is automatically calculated by MSP. You should add predecessors only to lowest level tasks. The option to adjust the deadlines is available. In earlier versions there is a button called Adjust Dates located on the Analysis toolbar. Use this button to adjust the Constraints to the new project start date. The ability to adjust deadlines is not available in the earlier versions of MS Project. There is a second percent complete called Percent Work completed.
These values may be separated using the option Schedule Updating Task Keystrokes: Open the files to be combined. Select the files to combine and click OK Create links across the projects or filter and group for reports. Save the files changed but do not save the temporary file. Double click on the little bar in the lower right corner of the Gantt chart view. The Task Form will appear in the lower half of the screen Gantt charts may always be printed by date range.
