Marek, Yes I would imagine they would support and continue to update LR3 with new lens profiles and things of that nature for a little while at least. And usually when a company is going to stop that support they will usually specify that. For the same download! When questioned about the reasons for the difference, an Adobe employee told me via on-line chat that it was because of “Australia’s import duties and IT regulations”.

It is differential geographic pricing, and it is gouging at its worst. I do not support software piracy, but it is actions like this that force some people to engage in that activity.

This gouging by Adobe is an attempt to protect retailers’ markups and should be deplored by any Australian purchaser. I hope Aussie photographers vote with their feet and buy the product via an on-line mailing service.

It will still be cheaper to receive a disk this way than buying a download from Adobe at their inflated Australian pricing structure. I don’t really care what the price is, it’s so worth it.

I payed for the original version and then each time to upgrade to V2 and V3. It’s been one of the best spent money on any photography related item I ever made. I was interested in this until I saw the Australian price. Oh that’s right, electrons cost more in Australia ;-. I’ve paid for each upgrade since V1. Why should we have to pay more. It costs no more to develop it for us as its the same software. In fact with our current exchange rate if anything you would expect it to cost less.

Mind you, if we get it via the download option maybe it costs more to download a greater distance!!! Wow that was a quick beta. I wonder if the fixed several of the faults I’ve seen? Anyone care to comment? Sometimes LR4Beta would just “hang” on importing photos, showing the Top-left progress bar but not moving LR4 seemed to lag behind LR3 when it came to file manipulations and browsing lots of images. I guess for the updated way the sliders work and the new clarity process is nice , but otherwise it doesn’t offer me anything majorly over LR3.

Just downloaded LR4 and it is buggy! Clone and Heal brush NOT working. Won’t open the image in Photoshop. Now I am stuck with all these bugs on an important project. Don’t tell me Adobe management didn’t plan this, that they didn’t know what their LR4 pricing strategy will be, when LR3 sales started few months ago, so this leaves a stench of yet another greed driven manipulation by Adobe.

If Adobe had any respect for their existing customers they would offer free upgrade to anyone that bought LR starting in November of Otherwise they shouldn’t be surprised when customers start looking for ways to not give them any sales in the future, or to delay purchasing of Adobe products for as long as possible. I know I will be one of them as I firmly believe any greedy company deserves strong lesson in how to be humble and not spit in the face of hand that feeds you.

Right, because of course cutting prices for your current and future products in half with a published expiration date for the current product pricing while providing a free beta with a published expiration date is the obvious way to abuse and cheat your customers.

I inquired and they happily sent me CS4. Besides I don’t know of any software user that doesn’t realize there is an upgrade timeline for software and if you research properly you would have known it was happening soon due to the age of CS3. I just purchased Lightroom 3. If I upgrade now I’ll have paid double for v. Phoned Adobe “customer service” a few minutes ago. No free upgrade for me. They were literally laughing at me. Actually, yes, you should be qualified for a free upgrade if you bought the product in the last 30 days.

No, they didn’t laugh at you. Come on. Adobe calls them “Post Announce Upgrades” and they give a page to see if you’re qualified:. You speak with the dealer — who of course knew about the coming price drop, when he sold you the car charging overprice. He offers you to swap your model done less than miles for a new If I were buying a car I would do considerable research and in all likely hood be well aware of an upcoming release of a new model. I wouldn’t buy an older or current model and then expect compensation upon its release.

You probably weren’t qualified because you didn’t meet their qualifications. I suspect you bought it over 30 days ago or didn’t provide a receipt for your purchase or whatever.

There is a process you have to go through. They don’t summarily dismiss you and laugh at you. Besides, when did you call them? I suspect you were on hold for a very long time. If you knew 4. You bought it and now have the option of upgrading. If you didn’t know that 4. Ouch Jen. I think the thing that bugs some people is that they knew 4. Obviously if they knew that they would have waited. I did not, however, know that I was paying 50 dollars more and would have to pay another 80 dollars to upgrade, in essence costing me dollars for a product that now costs I’m not going to cause a ruckus over it, but it should be quite obvious why this bothers some people.

It’s strange this recurring use of the phrase ‘have to’. You bought a product at a price you could afford, are you happy with its functionality? I understand the frustration that the new price scheme is lower than expected but your not out of pocket and you have a product which has the functionality you required.

I finally can afford an Adobe Product since i have been using zoner 14 and paint. I found the answer to the upgrade question and I’ll post the link below. Does Adobe offer any sort of “Upgrade Insurance” for people who just purchased LR3 less than a month ago? Some companies will not charge for the upgrade for new users who purchased the then current version just prior to the release.

Does Adobe do this? I bought LR3 from Adorama just a couple of weeks ago. If I had known that LR4 would be released this soon, I would have waited to purchase. Thanks for the tip. I put in all the info and pressed ok or whatever, and the next moment I was looking at the main support page. Is that normal behavior?

Also, no automated email came afterwards? Do they typically send one our or should I just wait a few days and hope for the best? Does anyone know if LR2 qualifies for the LR4 upgrade? I have already spent too long going around in circles trying to find where this information is. I have found quite a few references to the upgrade policy, but I can’t find where it is.

Anyway, that is a very good price compared to what it used to be. So now there are no more doubts, count me in! Can I do a regular Lightroom upgrade on a teachers edition? What’s your opinion When I bought an academic version in the US last time it was just a retail copy at a reduced price. I fully expect to be able to buy the upgrade. Will I get it? I don’t know. I have V3, and I’m thinking as much as I like the workflow, I kind of dislike its management capabilities.

I don’t use it for managing ‘finished’ photos any way, I wonder how much of a stretch it would be to do away with it completely. If this version is roughly half the price of the previous version, then how is this too expensive given that you obviously managed to find value in the old price?

I’m still trying to get used to the tool myself, but it certainly has potential. Dpreview data is wrong.

I just received a mail from Adobe, but I don’t think I will upgrade at that price, it’s too high. I think anything really compares. I got mine the previous version 3 months back. I bought 3. If I would have waited, I could have gotten 4. I would have been been better off waiting for this. Would have saved me money and time :. Going to call and have my Adorama receipt ready and see of I qualify. Just bought the upgrade this morning. My copy was delivered last week.

Call Adobe, if you bought after February 6th they will comp you the upgrade, or in my case reverse the charge that I made for the upgrade Davidwa – so, half the price of the previous version and you still find something to moan about.

I originally stated that the price reduction was good news and was only making a general comment about download versions being the same price as a boxed version.

The same price for boxed version and download version. Surely the download version should be cheaper. For European customers wondering why download prices are higher than physical media – this is caused by VAT rules. I don’t know why downloads should be more expensive, but at these prices you can’t complain. The reduced pricing is good news however their pricing policy is a mystery to me.

Just checked Adobe’s U. Web site and if I want to purchase Lighroom 4 Upgrade the price is However the price is Surely if I choose to download I’m saving CD manufacturing, packaging, people handling and postage costs so the download version should be much cheaper.

Come on Adobe, you have a development center in India and still you don’t offer your products through online store in India. I’ll bet this early introduction has everything to do with the introduction of the new Nikon and Canon camera’s. This way Adobe can force new camera owners to upgrade, due to the fact that ACR and lightrooms raw engine are not backwards compatible. However for me, I am glad that Adobe keeps developing their products.

No one is forcing you to do anything! You make your own choices in this World. If half the last release price isn’t enough to bring a smile to your face then either stick with the previous version and an older camera, or use something else that you don’t consider a dirty, underhand trick on the part of the manufacturer. I expect you spend far too much time looking over your shoulder, but they probably are out to get you anyway. Both are delivered electronically via download. Even taking into account the difference in exchange rates and taxes, the difference is a major ripoff.

One really needs to read all the little boxes on the screen before one goes ranting in a forum Why the difference? I can appreciate a difference in price with hardware given transportation, distribution, warranty, and so on. But in this case, it’s just delivered via download. All price greedy price gouging does is promote software piracy, take note Adobe and correct this in balance!!! Australia’s annual median income is far higher than that of our US cousins, and it is reflected in the price of things.

Just look at the price of household items. Its just how it is. No worries. Look, I understand Coke being more expensive as the cost of business for production and marketing is more here in Australia and the economy of scale less. However, software delivery, especially online is not subject to the same costs. I am not saying that’s it’s too expensive I’d pay much more for the software but I’m not paying more than my US cousins just because some corporate monkey in Adobe thinks I should be able to absorb the cost.

But I’ve always said that people can justify anything, and if this is the way you justify stealing software, then that is your prerogative. However, if the shipping destination is anywhere outside of NY state then no sales tax is applied. To that extent nearly all US residents can mitigate the application of sales tax applied to online purchases by simply by ordering from a supplier outside of their own state.

Well that’s frustrating. The “Try” download link on this page still links to LR3. Anyone have an alternative link that’s working? Just tried another one on this page. Same issue. While it boasted quite a few advanced features, it was accompanied by a hefty price tag. DJI has pared down this offering a bit with their latest subg release, the Mini 3.
